DD Residential Villages Proposed in FL Legislature
The Florida Legislature considered a bill early 2009 to allow large "planned residential communities" for people with developmental disabilities in the state (note: the bill did not go through). The bill removes the provision of local government approval, regardless of how close the homes are to each other. One such proposed village says it will provide a "transitional stepping-stone" for those to leave within "the greater community." The debate in the state seems to center around whether such villages are "segregated" or a choice by people with disabilities and/or their families which should be respected. What are your thoughts?
